LIVING in CHRIST 

Engage with the Bible at home individually and with family

HOW TO TAKE ACTION:

  • Participate in a Bible study through established classes and short-term programs (click here for current children, youth, and adult offerings)
  • Learn about how to read/study your Bible (how to start…) (UMC guidance)
  • Invest in a study Bible
  • Read, discuss or reflect on The Upper Room* or a devotional book/website
    *also available in hard copy at the church (Engaging with the Bible Resources)

Spend time in personal and family prayer on a regular basis

HOW TO TAKE ACTION:

  • Practice gratitude! Come up with 5 things each day for which you are thankful and share these with God; Recite Psalm 118:24 and reflect on the blessings of the day.
  • Pray before each individual or family dinner. Use The Lord’s Prayer or any other simple blessing (Sample Mealtime Prayers)
  • Pray with your spouse, significant other(s), or children at bedtime, giving thanks for the blessings of the day and asking for God’s help for yourself, your family and friends, people in our church, and in your community
  • I Remember My Baptism: “In the name of the Father - Son - and Holy Spirit – Amen” (cross yourself forehead to chest, then left to right shoulder)
  • Pray for your church (Ways to Pray for the Church)
  • Join Wednesday Night Prayer & Communion, led by Pastor Milton
  • Request to receive church prayer list via or submit a prayer request
  • Grow in prayer by learning new ways to pray (Resources to Grow in Prayer)
  • Join a spiritual formation class or group
  • Participate in the Walk to Emmaus
  • Go on a silent retreat

Attend Worship Regularly

HOW TO TAKE ACTION:

  • Attend and/or invite someone to worship service (in person or virtually)
  • Prepare for worship at home
  • Participate in a class to deepen your understanding and appreciation of worship. RSVP HERE

Observe the Sabbath

HOW TO TAKE ACTION:

  • Walk outside to enjoy creation and listen to the birds
  • Disconnect from digital media to intentionally focus on presence and quality communication or relationship building with those in your home
  • Try to create “margin” in your schedule by reducing your commitments (Creating Margin)
  • Go slow and savor each moment
  • Learn to “rest” and enjoy the opportunity to refrain from hyper-productivity (it's OK to “do nothing” and be bored!)
  • Take a nap
  • Connect with friends and family
  • Create a piece of artwork or do some other creative activity
  • Do a puzzle with your children
  • Start a journal record of ways you experience God's presence, other people's random acts of kindness and love, or your own ways of blessing others (Journaling Resources/Practices)

Care for Your Body-Heart-Mind as a Temple of the Holy Spirit

HOW TO TAKE ACTION:

  • Try these "Indoor Activities and Games to Get Children Moving" or follow this video for indoor chair yoga for beginners and seniors
  • Attend a yoga or tai chi class
  • Attend monthly Christian care/mental health workshops SEE DETAILS 
  • Increase your daily exercise: track your steps, take the stairs instead of an elevator, go for a walk on your lunch break, walk/run/bike/swim daily
  • Join our “Building Resilience in a Stressful World” Facebook group for encouragement and support; Sara Stewart for additional information
  • Focus on healthy eating, proper exercise, and proper sleep each day
  • Eliminate stressful, unhealthy, habits from your daily routine
  • Get things in order to bless your family: have a will, medical directive, and any specific wishes regarding end of life put into writing; organize important documents and let your family know where to find them
