Suncreek United Methodist Church has responded in numerous ways to the needs presented by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita:

Health kits and flood buckets collected at Suncreek UMC

  • We have become a District collection site for donations for United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).

  • We have collected hundreds of health kits and flood buckets from our congregation and preschool.

Volunteers assemble health kits and flood buckets at Suncreek UMC (September 2005)

  • We have taken work teams to volunteer at St. Luke’s Community United Methodist Church to help with their relief efforts.

We have had numerous members volunteers at Allen Community Outreach sorting items donated for flood victims.

We have collected over $13,300 to support the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).

  • We have had several members volunteer to help transform the Wal-Mart in McKinney into a shelter as well as volunteer while the evacuees stayed in the shelter.

  • We have had teams of volunteers work at the warehouse in McKinney where they distribute clothing and other items to evacuees.

  • We have collected $6,745 for Bridge of Relief in McKinney  to help move persons from shelters to apartments and homes.

  • We have church members who are serving as advocates for people displaced by the hurricane.  This is a process of helping the people register for assistance, help them become acquainted with the community, and walking them through the process of starting over.

  • We have church members who have adopted families in the community and are helping set them up in housing until they can go back home or find other housing.

Removing Sheetrock from a flooded home (October 2005).

  • We sent a team of eight adults to New Orleans, Louisiana October 7-10.  The team completed extensive work at two homes and distributed relief supplies like health kits, flood buckets, and soap to other families in the areas where they worked.  The team took donated building materials like 28 panels of sheetrock and gallons of bleach.  Click here for more information about the trip.

Worship Service for Evacuees at Wesley-Rankin (September 2005)

  • We donated money, supplies, meals, bedding, and volunteers to assist Wesley Rankin Community Center when they housed evacuees from the Texas Gulf Coast during Hurricane Rita.  When evacuees requested a worship service, Rev. Kathleen Baskin-Ball led a bilingual (Spanish/English) service on Sunday evening.  Suncreek members attended the service and provided dinner after the service.  Staff and residents from the Wesley-Rankin Community also attended and assisted with the worship service.  Click here to view some photos.

  • We sought volunteers to help distribute debit cards through the Red Cross office in McKinney.

  • We have several church families who are housing relatives who have been displaced from their homes.  We have provided support, food, and other necessities to assist them as needed.

  •  We have people regularly worshiping with us on Sundays that have been displaced by the hurricane.  They are persons staying with family members who are members of our church.

  • We have sought to provide at least one volunteer opportunity every week in which persons can go as a team to help with the relief efforts.
