January 2008 Mission Trip

Suncreek members traveled to Juarez, Mexico January 24-28 to build a home.  The team of eight built a home for Maxi and her new husband, Chuy.  They have been friends of the Proyecto Abrigo ministry for years.  They were chosen by Reverend Jose Luis Portillo to receive this home which is located on the new land which is being developed with additional dorms, a church, and a home for people who need a place to stay until they have their own property. The home that was built by the Suncreek team was essential to this new vision and ministry so Maxi and her family can supervise and monitor the new land and buildings.  The new territory is located in Loma Blanca.  The new church will be called Sublime Gracia.  It means Amazing Grace.

College Age Mission Trip - May 2008

From May 15-19, eight college students and four adults traveled to Juarez, Mexico to build two cinder block homes.  The families we were able to help were living in very small cardboard and wood pallet homes.

One of the families has two daughters and two sons.  One of the boys is nine years old.  His name is Sergio.  He is an amazing young man who worked right alongside of us to build his home.  You could just see the pride in his eyes while he moved cinder blocks, shoveled gravel, and helped mix the concrete.  During the blessing of the home he clung to us and asked when he would see us again.  We assured him we would visit him again in October and a smile replaced the tears.

The other family had three small boys.  They were a very quiet family who even had a pet bunny that ran around playing with the puppies.  It was quite remarkable to watch.  The team had a wonderful time bonding together as they were able to bless these two families with new homes.

The team also presented lovely felt story boards to the Nuevo Pacto Church congregation.  The felt boards were made by the Suncreek UMW during their recent retreat.  The church is trying to start a children’s Sunday school program and they were very touched by the gift.  The team was also able to take over a hundred bandana buddies made by the Mission Possible kids of Suncreek.  The bandana buddies will be distributed to the children that visit the medical clinic associated with the church and the Wesley Fundacion Community Center.

Mission Trip to Copper Canyon, Mexico - April 2008

A team of eight traveled to Copper Canyon, Mexico April 8-13 to take food, supplies, and blankets to the Tarahumara Indians. Due to a severe drought, the need for food and supplies was even greater than ever. The team consisted of Scott and Helen Strickland, Tracy and Phil Ullman, Olga Binford, Rita Thomas, Hillary Baker from Ohio, and Janet Hunt.

We were blessed by the beauty of the majestic Copper Canyon, but most of all by the beauty, dignity, and grace of the Tarahumara Indians. It was an extreme pleasure to serve the Lord by distributing food, blankets, and other supplies to the Indians. The team had the honor and privilege of worshipping with the Tarahumara Indians and the church members from Nuevo Pacto, lead by Rev. Jose Luis Portillo of Proyecto Abrigo.

The team also spent time sealing the holes in the cabin of Gov. Lazaro’s home from the weather. The April communion offering from Suncreek UMC was a blessing in so many ways. It was used to purchase food, replace the roof for Gov. Lazaro, purchase pigs for Pastor Pedro who works with the Indians, purchase food and supplies for a boarding school we visited, and purchase other greatly needed supplies for the community. Thank you for your generosity in making this mission experience a blessing to the Tarahumara community.
