February 2007 Mission Trip

Thirteen adults traveled to Juarez, Mexico February 8-12 and their hearts were changed forever.  We had the wonderful opportunity to build two homes for families living in very poor conditions.  One home was built for a single mother of three.  Her new home will help her feel more secure and keep her children warm.  The other home was built for a grandmother raising her four grandchildren.  The grandchildren were abandoned by their parents four years ago when their home burned.  All of the children have some form of birth defect or health problem.  These medical conditions have not affected their spirits.  They are very affectionate and loving children.  During the blessing of the home the children could not control their anguish at the fact that our team was going home and would not be there to play and work alongside of them anymore.  Thanks to the Olga and David Binford and the FAITH group all four children will now be sponsored to attend school.  If you would like more information about the school expense adoption program please contact Janet Hunt in the church office.  The team was joined by Clay and Kara Kennedy from Highland Park UMC.  This is their second trip to join Suncreek on a trip to Juarez.  They are already planning future trips with us.

College Age Mission Trip - May 2007

Eight college youth and three adults traveled to Juarez, Mexico to build two homes May 17-21.  They built a home for a man in his seventies who lives alone.  He was robbed of everything he owned fifteen days before our arrival.  He was so touched to be receiving a cinder block home.  He has lived in a cardboard shelter his entire life.  The other home was for a grandmother who lives by her daughter so she can help take care of her grandchildren.  She was so touched and was overwhelmed by the love and care we showed her by building her home.

Zacatecas Mission Trip - October 2007

Our trip to Zacatecas, Mexico was an amazing experience.  We built a classroom onto the second floor of a church.  We were very thankful that we were not using the normal cinder block bricks we use to build homes in Juarez.  The bricks, water, sand, and other supplies were lifted by hand or by buckets.  We had the privilege of staying in the home of Martin Lechuga's family during our visit.  Martin works with Reverend Jose Luis Portillo with Proyecto Abrigo.  We all fell in love with the sweet little church and the unique designs and architecture.  Our team collected the funds needed to replace the broken glass in the windows and especially to replace the broken colored plastic in the front door with beautiful blue and amber-colored glass.  We purchased paint and gave the front of the church a facelift too.  We also fell in love with Pastor Oscar, the local pastor of this little church which has faced great persecution and struggles.  They had been praying for this new classroom for over ten years.  The Suncreek team felt very blessed to be the instrument God used to bring about this answer to prayer.

We also toured the local countryside and beautiful cities including Aguascalientes and Zacatecas City.  The capital city of Zacatecas was amazing and held numerous breathtaking cathedrals.  We visited ancient Aztec ruins called La Quemada (which means "The Burnt One") and climbed to the top.  It was a real eye opener to read about some of their customs.

This trip truly was a wonderful experience.  We plan to visit again and continue to help Pastor Oscar and his wonderful congregation.
