2006 Mission Trips to Juarez Mexico

We took two Adult Mission Trips, one Family Mission Trip, and one College Age Mission Trip to Juarez in 2006.   The first trip occurred over an extended weekend on Thursday, February 23 - Monday, February 27.  The college age trip was in early June. The Family Mission Trip for ages 10 and older was September 30 to October 4.  Another Thursday  to Monday Adult trip was offered on October 19- 23 2006.   Please contact Janet Hunt for information about future trips at Janet.Hunt@SuncreekUMC.org.

October 2006 Mission Trip

The October adult mission trip to Juarez was an amazing experience.  We built a home for a wonderful family.  The family was still really grieving the loss of their one-month-old child that froze to death in their cardboard home last winter.  The mother worked tirelessly along side the team to help build her new home.  She kept remarking about how grande (large) it was.   After the home was completed, we worked to construct a floor at another home.  This family is related to the family who we build a home for a few weeks earlier on the family mission trip.

The team for the trip include Janet Hunt, Rita Thomas, Joe Williams, Brian Lewis, Flethcer Magbee from Suncreek UMC and Clay and Kara Kennedy from Highland Park UMC.  Kara is the cousin of Bill D. Ball, Jr. (Rev. Kathleen Baskin-Ball's husband.)

Reflections on the February 2006 Mission Trip

On this trip, thirteen adults traveled to Juarez, Mexico to build two homes.  One of our families had three wonderful children who loved to work alongside the mission team.  The nine-year-old boy bonded with the team and was deeply moved when we had to say our goodbyes. The other home was built for a family with a three-year-old daughter and a baby on the way.  The homes were further out in the dessert and were more isolated than where we had worked in the past. The team was very happy to be able to provide them with secure homes for their protection.

We also were able to see the medical clinic in action for the first time.  It was very rewarding to see it serving persons in need.

                                 Trip Summary by Janet Hunt

Love knows no boundaries..........even though I don't speak or understand Spanish -the relationship that I built with the Sanchez's family is one of love, respect, and friendship.  I will never forget them, especially the smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes when their house was finished.  Its hard to put the experience in words to do it justice.

God Bless Juana, Alfredo, Jose Luis, Marteen, Janet, and all the other selfless people who make Proyecto Abrigo successful.

But the needy will not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the afflicted ever perish." Psalm 9:18

It was such a joy for me to return to Juarez once again to build cinder block homes for two families in need.  We laughed, we cried, we saw old friends, we made new friends, but most importantly we shared the love of Christ with others.  It was a wonderful trip and I can't wait to go again!   -
