2004

This was my second trip to Juarez to build houses and it was as rewarding as the first time. I can't explain the feeling of peace I feel when I am there.  The people we've met are so gracious and loving.  I especially enjoy meeting and interacting with the children and seeing their faces light up when you give them candy or color pictures with them.   I can't wait to go again in February!”      Rita T.

On October 24, 2004, 11 men and women from Suncreek UMC began their journey to Juarez, Mexico.  On Sunday, they flew to El Paso and rode across the border to Juarez.  On Monday morning, they started building a concrete room addition for Isabel and her extended family.  Isabel is the pastor of a local church and she frequently invites church members and acquaintances in need to stay in her humble dwelling.

Two years earlier, a team from Suncreek UMC had worked on Isabel's home and had built a strong bond with her family.  The team replaced a room built with cardboard and wood pallets with a cinder block structure.  The 2004 team worked on another area of her home.  The constructed a cinder block room to replace a room where the structure was crumbling.  The team finished this project on Thursday.

On Friday, the group asked if they could start another project since they had finished Isabel's home a day early.  They were given the opportunity to work on Juana and Alfredo's home.  Juana is the social worker who seeks out and finds families who have a great need for a home.  Alfredo leads some of the construction aspects of Proyecto Abrigo (Project Shelter) and helps provide transportation to church workteams.

The task at Juana and Alfredo's home was to replace a decaying flat roof.  The team worked to construct a sloped roof.  The project presented some engineering challenges, but the Suncreek team met these challenges and completed the project late Friday Afternoon.

On Saturday, the Suncreek team went to Isabel's home and held a brief worship service blessing her new home.  Later, the group visited the Lydia Patterson Institute in El Paso.   They met the student who was receiving a scholarship from funds raised by the church's annual golf tournament.

It was inspiring to witness the living testimonies, and commitments of Jose Louis and Alfredo to their community. These two men have chosen to give to their neighbors in spite of having many opportunities to leave their hometown and pursue a much higher "material" standard of living in the States. The obvious result of their choices are that they are truly experiencing life abundant.”   Scott V.
